Surfin’ Snowman, Santa’s Helper taking a run for local non-profits

The Surfin’ Snowman 5-Mile Run and the Santa’s Helper 2-Miler Family Run/Walk Challenge ride into town Saturday, Dec. 30, on a wave of success — five years’ worth, to be exact.

According to Race Director Rick Hundley, the run and walk benefit three local organizations: Justin’s Beach House, the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company and Contractors for a Cause.

Justin’s Beach House, located in Bethany Beach, allows families dealing with cancer to spend time at the beach, away from doctors and hospitals. Justin’s Beach House was the flagship project of Contractors for a Cause, which its members developed, funded and built.

The Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company covers fire and ambulance services for an area stretching from the Indian River Inlet south to the Delaware-Maryland line.

Hundley said he expects about 600 runners to join in the race on Saturday, no matter what the weather.

“We’re a rain-or-shine event,” Hundley said, adding that the race has never had to be canceled.

Glow necklaces will be provided to participants in Bethany’s first and only twilight run/walk, as well as long-sleeved tech shirts (while supplies last) and a race goodie bag. The 5-miler event loops through downtown Bethany Beach once, and the 2-Miler run/walk loops around town once, Hundley said. All races will be chip-timed, he said. There will be first-, second- and third-place awards for the 5-miler race in five-year-age groups, as well as for overall times and Masters (40 or older) groups.

The Surfin’ Snowman and Santa’s Helper events are officially sanctioned, Hundley said, by Athletes Serving Athletes, a Baltimore-based organization that pairs athletes with disabled people who are interested in participating in athletic events. Hundley said about 35 participants in the Surfin’ Snowman/Santa’s Helper events will be Athletes Serving Athletes members.

An after-party will be held on the Bethany Beach bandstand, which serves as the race finish line. D.J. Padraig will serve up music and fun to go along with apple and pumpkin pies provided by Giant, along with hot chocolate. On-course music will also be provided to keep up runners’ spirits as they make their way around town.

The race will begin at 4 p.m. On-site registration begins at the Bethany Beach Ocean Suites on the boardwalk at Hollywood Street at 2 p.m. Pre-race-day registration can be completed online at Race package pick-up will also be held at the Ocean Suites location beginning at 2 p.m. on Dec. 30.

Hundley said volunteers are welcome and can register at the same places as runners and walkers.
